U.S. Passport Services – Expedited or Standard?

Passport Services

I remember the first time I was invited to go on a trip “over seas”. I was about 21 and a friend asked me to go to London with her. I looked at her with amazement wondering if this possibly could be true. What was worse was what if it was! What did I have to do to get there? OMG I needed a passport! This was in the 70s and we didn’t have the luxury of the internet or even the U.S. Postal Service to help us with such things. After going to a professional photographer for my passport photos, getting my birth certificate out of my mother’s safe deposit box and then going to New York to fill in the application, I waited patiently for almost three months to finally receive my “ticket to heaven”. At long last, the day had arrived. It came in a brown envelope which was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen for inside was my United States PassPort!

Those days are long since gone and in many ways, good. You can now get a U.S. Passport directly on the internet via an online application. If you’re really in a hurry, you can even get it with a 24 hour turn-around service! Frankly, I think everyone should have a passport. It’s your right as a citizen and almost a badge of honor. I remember while in Egypt not long ago, I was asked to surrender my passport to the hotel. I refused. When they asked what my problem was, I told them that my passport was more than my identity. Iit was my freedom, my heritage, and my way back to my home. I was not going to risk someone stealing it or copying it or any other thing. I would watch and wait if they had to verify it. So they agreed. Keep that in mind during these disturbing times. Don’t lose sight of your passport!

In order to get your U.S. passport – either new or as a renewal – it really is quite easy. You can go to the US Postal Service and apply. You can go to their web site and see if there is a passport app service near you. Usually, for an additional $15.00, they will facilitate your photos there as well as the application. Make sure you check with them before going over there as some of these service locations require an appointment. The charge for a traditional U.S. Passport book (new) is $100.00 and can take up to three months to get it. If you want a “rush” put on it, you can ask for the Department of State’s Expedited Passport Processing Service. This will cost an additional $60.00 and the turnaround times vary. At the time of this writing, the turnaround is 5 to 7 days. If you want it Express Mailed back to you, you’ll have to pay for that as well.

Alternatively, you can now use one of the fantastic online services. The RushMyPassport.com service will issue:

  • New Passports
  • Lost/Stolen Passports
  • Passport Pages
  • Passport Renewals
  • Child Passports
  • Name Changes

What’s even better is how easy and fast it is! They will tell you exactly what paperwork they need and how to supply it to them. If you need it super fast, you can get that service as well. Here is what they offer:

  • 24 Hour Service – One Business Day – $299.00 plus Government Fee
  • Next Day Service – Two Business Days – $249.00 plus Government Fee
  • Priority Service – 3 to 4 Business Days – $199.00 plus Government Fee
  • Rush Service – 5 to 7 Business Days – $149.00 plus Government Fee
  • Standard Service – 8 to 12 Business Days – $99.00 plus Government Fee

However you decide to apply for your passport, be sure to treat it properly.  Don’t leave it laying around where anyone can pick it up!  Use it wisely and have a great time on your trip!

Perpignan holiday

As Perpignan is the last Languedoc city before the Spanish border it is equally both French and Catalan. Maybe it is this which informs so much of its heritage, which dates all the way back to Roman time when the population first arrived. It is a fabulous city of heritage and art, with long held traditions along with a modern way of life. Salvador Dali, the famous painter and renown surrealist, once referred to Perpignan train staion as the worlds center. According to historians he developed many of his brilliant ideas while sat at this station waiting for a train. Let’s take a quick look at the history and traditions of this gem in the Languedoc.

On the eastern sothern coast of the Med in France, close to Spain is the Catalan city of Perpignan. It is a place where, throughout history, cultures have converged. It was the hub of clothes manufacturing during the Middle Ages and it has always had a thriving wine export industry, one which has occasionally brought it into conflict with the French government.

Perpignan’s strong traditon of rugby is well known throughout Europe. Regularly competing in major cup competitions, their teams carry the hopes of the city. Failure has not been an option. The rugby team has a fighting sprit that contrasts with the pretty delicate nature of the city itself. Perpignan has proven itself in other sporting fields, for example, with its three time Olympic swimmer.

Bordered by beautiful green grass and winding it’s way through the centre of the city is a twinkling canal reflecting the medieval buildings. Walk on into the older parts of town and enjoy the many restaurants and trendy shops. The best place to start your exploration is at the grand redbrick Castillet close to the canal.

Fleeing repression in their homelands, many Moroccans and Algerians have found a safe haven in Perpignan. Sadly there has occasionally been some bad feelings between the new comers and the established population.

If visiting this Languedoc city be sure to vist the grand Palais des Rois de Majorque. Some of Europes most beautiful gardens are to be found here. There is also a courtyard and a palace. This is a mjour attraction for toursits to Perpignan, but not the only one.

It needed 200 years of hard work to create the Cathedral of St John. I think anything with that much time invested in it is well worth checking out. Plus, you can go to mass at the same time. The Catholics constructed many of these churches during the middle ages and some have descibed them as the “8th wonders of the world”.

Perpignan has at the end of the day much to delight all who visit. Be sure to take a couple of days here before visiting everything else that the Languedoc has on offer.

‘If you’re going to New York you must get a New York Pass. Our family of four saved over $1,000 by using the pass instead of paying entrance fees for all the attractions. We couldn’t have seen anywhere near as much of the city if we hadn’t had the pass as we couldn’t have justified paying the entrance to many’

Why have lots of people started learning at home by downloading the audio? Learning at your own pace is one of the many benefits. Secondly check for a good reputation.

Thirdly ease of use.

This is a really important point if you are new to computers. Try to find an easy to follow program, that you fully understand. Learning will be a lot faster with a fun, informal format even if you are more computer wise.

Lastly check for compatibility issues.

The majority of modern Spanish Audio couses are compatible with all modern computers. Make sure your PC and operating system are compatible with the course you want to download.

Where to download Spanish audio classes?

With all that said, you might be wondering what program could possibly match all of these requirements, and where do you look for it? Traveling With Credit Cards

Your should take credit cards along on your trips.  Even when you travel abroad.

It’s a good idea to let your card company or bank know when and where you’ll be traveling.Because of the growing identity theft problems, some card companies may question supicious spending patterns.  They might block charges on your card to protect you from fraud…  You know, like a lot of charges from London when you live in Des Moines. You don’t have to tell your card company when you travel abroad, but it may be wise to make sure your card can be used.

Travel with only a couple of charge cards in addition to your ATM card. You shouldn’t take all your cards, too risky if you lose them, but you do need to have more than one type of card.  It’s a good idea because if something happens and one card can’t be used, you’ll have a backup.

Some places only take Visa; some only take MasterCard.  Pick one or two of each and leave the rest at home.  American Express may say “Don’t leave home without it,” but there are many places that won’t take their card.  It’s a good card to have, but it’s also good to know the limitations.

If two of you are traveling as a couple, consider carrying different credit cards.  This will give you even more options.

If you rent a car, sometimes car rental companies will put a large charge on your card at the beginning as a deposit, leaving you less on your credit line. The spare cards will insure you always have a card to use.  You do want to charge the car on a card that will cover collision damage waiver… that’ll save you money.

Credit card companies have started adding international transaction fees.  Visa and MasterCard have charged a 1 percent fee for years, but now some banks that issue the card also tack on a 1-2 percent foreign transaction fee in addition to that.  Quiz your bank or card company.  There are a handful of cards which don’t charge any fees at all.  As of this writing, Capital One Card charges no fees, so you might want to carry one of those.

Don’t let foreign vendors charge that bill for you in dollars.  It seems nice, but you’ll probably end up paying more.  The dollar amount you’re charged may be at a crummy exchange rate (way worse than you’d get with your credit card or ATM), and you’re card company will still likely charge you a foreign transaction fee.

Credit cards are accepted in more places all the time…. most now in fact.  But there are still many little B&Bs that take only cash, some small restaurants too.  And in some less developed countries you may find you need to pay in cash.  If you want to pay with your card, they may add 3-5 percent onto your bill to make up for the fees that they’re charged.Take cash when you travel to use in places that don’t accept cards, but be sure to also take those credit cards with you.
