Manrique was born in the island capital of Arrecife in 1919 and developed a deep love for his birthplace from a very young age.  Fostered by long summers spent on the beach at Famara in the north of the island, where his family kept a holiday home.  And where the huge 8km long bay is flanked by the majestic sight of the Famara massif cliff range.

Just as many youngsters do, Manrique had itchy feet and wanted to travel the world and study art in Europe and elswhere in the world, where he could gain a much wider experience. He did exactly as planned and became a champion of the island.

Manrique was appalled at the potential threat to the islands culture when he returned from his travels but at the same time, Manrique also accepted that his fellow islanders could not continue to live off just fishing and agriculture alone.  So Manrique also started work on the creation of a series of seven cultural attractions that would become the mainstay of the island tourist industry to this day.  Encompassing brilliant works of architecture such as the Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Rio.  Whilst also campaigning tirelessly for a retrained and sensible approach to construction.

Scottish Island Vacations And Harris

Are you mulling over having a holiday in the British Isles? Although the majority of visitors having a vacation in the United Kingdom choose to stay in famous places like London, others prefer to take a vacation in Scotland. In the following article I describe the Isle of Harris and the reasons why it is such a great vacation destination.

Although London might be home to some of the greatest museums and galleries in the whole of Great Britain  and some of the world’s finest attractions  England’s capital will not appeal to visitors of all types.

Some tourists prefer vacations which are more relaxed while other tourists would rather have vacations with a little more action for example sporting vacations. Interestingly the Isle of Harris, in the Western Isles of Scotland, is ideal for both types of visitor.

Like a great many other folk bathing on the beach for the whole of my summer vacation isn’t my idea of the perfect vacation. Please do not get the wrong idea, my family and I often spend time on sunny beaches, and the Isle of Harris definitely has some of the most amazing beaches in Britain, but, I like to travel inland a little too. I really like to spend time just soaking in the atmosphere of the place, I really like to indulge in the local foods and sampling the culture. If the truth is to be known I just like to experience something new each year and I try extremely hard attempting to discover something one hundred percent unique. Most probably this is why I enjoy visits to the island in the Hebrides known as the Isle of Harris and why I frequently decide to book self catering houses on the Isle of Harris.

One of the main reasons folk travel to the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the the culture and landscape of the Isles. The Harris culture has, over hundreds of years been strongly influenced by the Scottish, English, Norse and Celtic races. Nowadays the majority of people speak in the Gaelic language and though some speak English, it is more often their second language. The inhabitants of the Isle of Harris are amongst the most friendly in the world and the hospitality is known across the world. The people of Harris are incredibly proud of the breathtaking beauty of the island and try very hard to keep the island tidy so it is crucially important not to leave litter.

It is incredibly important that you keep in mind that discarded rubbish doesn’t only make the place look unsightly it is also immensely dangerous to wildlife.

Another vital thing to learn is that the roads on Harris are drastically different to those experienced on the Scottish mainland single track roads are very common and you will need to know how to use passing places to let oncoming traffic past and also let traffic from behind to pass too. Simply pull over into the left hand side. But, If you are faced with a large and cumbersome vehicle wishing to pass and the passing place is on the right of the road you can move over into it to allow the vehicle pass more easily but be careful not to drive off the edge of the road too much.

Scottish Island Vacations And Arran

Scotland, in Great Britain, is an amazing destination to have a vacation with a huge list of visitor attractions including some of the most impressive museums and galleries in the whole of Britain,  perfect countryside for hikers, hill-walkers, ramblers, mountain climbers and others of that ilk together with a massive selection of fortified houses, country houses, historical buildings and castles.  Below I discuss the Isle of Arran and describe why the island is such a fantastic place to visit.

The Isle of Arran is the 7th largest island in Scotland and even though Arran is often said to be in the Hebrides it is actually located in the Firth of Clyde. As tourism is the main industry on Arran it will not surprise you to learn that there is a huge number of Isle of Arran hotels. Though most visitors visit the island in order to enjoy the awe inspiring countryside the island also features a reasonable selection of visitor attractions including; Kildonan Castle, Arran Heritage Museum, Arran Transport Museum and Brodick Castle Gardens.

There are several towns and villages, the largest is Brodick, where you will find the ferry terminal where you can sail to Ardrossan on the North Ayrshire coast. Lamlash, located 4 miles to the south of Brodick, is the point of departure to Holy Island.

Lochranza is main settlement in the northern part of the island and will find the site of the ferry terminal where you can sail to Claonaig in Argyll and Bute. Please note that the ferry only runs in the summer. Lochranza is situated in a wide, and extremely picturesque, bay with the ruined Lochranza Castle being the main attraction.

Blackwaterfoot is the most populous village on the western coast of Arran. The village features a tiny harbour, a pub and a garage (including a petrol station). Different settlements to visit are; Catacol (in the north), Whiting Bay (south of Brodick), Kilmory (south coast), Corrie (north of Brodick) and last but not least Pirnmill where the finest beach on the island is located.
